Baby Boy Symptoms in First Trimester

The first trimester of pregnancy is usually the toughest one! We deal with pregnancy fatigue, morning sickness, headaches, and our pregnancy hormones are completely out of whack!

If this is your first time being pregnant, then you may be in for a surprise!

One symptom that is true in the first trimester is that no matter what sex the baby is, you will be exhausted!

So sleep as much as you can, especially if you don’t have any other children at home!

Take advantage of the afternoon or late evening naps after work! Once you have that baby, those won’t be happening anymore!

Keep taking your prenatal vitamins, they will help with fatigue! If you’re super exhausted, talk to your doctor about checking your iron levels too!

Morning Sickness and Pregnancy Nausea

Women tend to experience morning sickness or all day sickness that is much worse when pregnant with a baby girl!.

This was a HUGE sign that I was having a baby boy because I wasn’t vommiting like I did with my girls. My morning sickness was horrible with all of my girls and felt like the roughest 3 months of my life until my second trimester!

Boy pregnancies can cause morning sickness and nausea as well but it usually isn’t as bad as girl pregnancies.

I personally was only nauseous at night for a few hours and a little when I woke up with my baby boy but it was nothing like with my girls.

I had all day and night sickness with my girls!

This is an old wives tale that pregnancy nausea and morning sickness is worse with girls but it was absolutely true for me and many of my friends.

Let us know in the comments if you feel the same way!

Some morning sickness remedies that SAVED me were Morning sickness teas and candies and Italian sodas I drank throught out the day.

Urine Color

Yes, this is strange but here me out!

If your urine is normally light in color and all of a sudden since you became pregnant and it is much darker, this could indicate the sex of your baby.

I always had light color urine and so did all of my girls, in fact- we always knew when my husband used the bathroom and didn’t flush because his urine was so much darker than our’s! TMI!

However, this was a huge sign for me that I was possibly having a boy!

Your doctor may say it could be because of your prenatal vitamins that are causing the change of color in your urine, but that wasn’t the case for me.

I took the SAME prenatal vitmains throughout ALL 4 of my pregnancices and my urine never looked that way with my girls!

Salty Foods Over Sweets?

When I was carrying my girls, once I reached around month four and felt well enough to eat, I craved sweets nonstop — ice cream, chocolate, the whole works!

However, with my son, it was nothing like that. I couldn’t even tolerate sweet lemon candies that had helped immensely with my night-time nausea.

Interestingly, many old wives’ tales suggest that craving salty or savory foods rather than sweets might indicate you’re having a boy.

Of course, the research shows there’s no reliable link between specific cravings and baby gender.

Nothing—absolutely nothing sweet touched my lips!

My food aversions when pregnant with my son were completely different. Instead of craving desserts and sweets, I found myself drawn to salty, fatty, and spicy foods — grease and richness suddenly felt comforting, and sugary treats were not appealing.

Of course, many say this is simply folklore with no scientific backing.

According to doctors, food cravings during pregnancy often reflect your body’s underlying needs rather than predicting baby’s gender. (Source)

I absolutely loved guacamole when I was pregnant with my son and I never even tried it before in my life previously or wanted anything to do with it prior to his pregnancy!

Baby Boy Heart Rate

The baby’s heart rate also served as a major clue for me that I might be carrying a boy.

According to popular old wives’ tales, fetal heart rates above approximately 160 beats per minute suggest a girl, whereas lower rates are thought to indicate a boy.

In my case, each of my three daughters had heart rates in the 170s and higher. In contrast, when expecting my son, his heart rate measured around 142–145 bpm.

However, is this claim supported by science?

The answer is no—research shows no meaningful difference in fetal heart rate based on sex. (Source)

Small- Basketball Shaped Belly

Many mothers claim they carried their sons differently than their daughters.

In my own experience, I didn’t notice any significant difference in the shape of my belly compared to my pregnancies with my girls.

The only distinction was that I gained a bit more weight with my son—he simply felt heavier, but that was the extent of it.

Throughout my pregnancies with my daughters, countless people commented that I appeared to be “carrying a boy” because my bump was all belly.

Of course, they were mistaken!

Some believe that when expecting a boy, the baby bump tends to project outward—resembling the shape of a basketball—and sits lower. On the other hand, a pregnancy with a girl is said to create a wider belly, with additional weight gain around the hips and buttocks.

But is there any truth to this?

There are no scientific studies to support these claims. In reality, the shape and position of a pregnancy belly are more likely influenced by a mother’s natural body type, muscle tone, and posture.

For example, I’m tall and found that my belly looked similar in all my pregnancies. Factors such as diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation) can also greatly affect how a belly appears during pregnancy.

One thing that provided tremendous relief for me during pregnancy was a maternity support wrap.

The one I used was a 3-in-1 design—one section offered lower back and belly support during pregnancy, while the remaining pieces were perfect for postpartum recovery.

They helped with abdominal muscle support, assisted in healing diastasis recti, and aided in gently shrinking the uterus after birth.

Skin Changes

When I was pregnant with my son, I noticed a significant improvement in the condition of my skin. It was remarkably better than during my pregnancies with my daughters.

In those previous pregnancies, I struggled with frequent breakouts and extreme sensitivity to skincare products.

What’s more, the “glow” often celebrated during pregnancy felt more like a greenish hue thanks to relentless nausea with my girls!!!

With my son, however, the transformation was dramatic. I finally experienced the beautiful, healthy “pregnancy glow” I’d always heard about.

While this was my personal experience, it’s important to note that although the phenomenon of pregnancy glow is real—thanks to increased blood flow and hormonal shifts—it does not reliably indicate the sex of the baby.

If you are experiencing skin blemishes or sensitivities, I recommend using this soap! I used this with all of my girls and it helped aos much!

Itchy Belly

It’s completely normal to experience an itchy belly during pregnancy.

As your skin stretches and your hormones fluctuate, mild itching is common—something I noticed throughout my first three pregnancies with my daughters.

However, during my pregnancy with my son, the itching was significantly more intense.

Out of caution, I consulted my doctor to rule out cholestasis—a liver condition that can occur during pregnancy and often causes itching on the hands and feet, especially in the third trimester.

Thankfully, my doctor confirmed that my symptoms were simply the result of skin stretching and not a cause for concern.

Please talk to your doctor if you are experiencing these itchy symptoms.

Interestingly, there’s an old wives’ tale suggesting that intense itching during pregnancy is a sign you’re expecting a boy. However, there is no scientific evidence to support this claim.

Itching is a common pregnancy symptom that can occur regardless of the baby’s gender, often due to skin expansion and hormonal changes.

In my case, the itching was limited to the first trimester and likely related to my baby’s faster growth rate, which caused my skin to stretch more quickly than in my previous pregnancies.

To help with the stretching skin and prevent stretch marks, I used this cream I swear by and so do my close friends!

Does Linea Nigra Belly Line Show During a Boy Pregnancy?

Have you noticed a dark vertical line on your belly?

That’s known as linea nigra. According to an old wives’ tale, if the line stretches from your rib cage down to your uterus, it indicates you might be expecting a boy.

However, if the line is lighter in color and begins at the navel and travels down, the prediction is a girl.

In my four pregnancies, the appearance of the linea nigra remained consistent—except that it appeared darker during my pregnancy with my son than with my daughters.

Contrary to the myth, the length of the line did not differ in my experience. Additionally, with my son it took longer to appear. The line became visible only at the end of my second trimester, whereas with my daughters it manifested much earlier.

Although such folklore is widely circulated, scientific evidence provides no support for the use of linea nigra as a gender predictor.

The Skull Theory

The skull theory is among the more scientific-sounding methods for predicting a baby’s gender.

This theory proposes that the shape of the fetal skull visible on ultrasound may offer clues. A more blocky, squared skull is often attributed to boys, while a more tapered and delicate skull is thought to indicate a girl.

That said, it is crucial to understand that the skull theory is not scientifically validated. Experts note that fetal skulls at early stages of development do not exhibit clearly gender-specific traits, making this method unreliable. {Source}

Medical professionals generally advise relying on proven methods—such as anatomical ultrasound scans or non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT)—to determine fetal sex.

In short: while skull theory may be an interesting and harmless guessing game for expectant parents, it should not be treated as a reliable method for gender prediction.

I wasn’t aware of the Skull theory when I was pregnant with my boy so this is new to me but it could give clues to new moms during their ultrasound of the sex of the baby.

Got Cold Feet?

Experiencing unusually cold feet during pregnancy is a phenomenon some women report.

It is commonly attributed to the increased blood volume and circulatory changes that occur as the body adapts to support the growing fetus. (Source)

Among the various old wives’ tales associated with gender prediction, cold feet have also been cited as a sign of bearing a boy.

According to this belief, persistently chilly feet may indicate a male fetus, whereas warmer or unaffected feet are thought to suggest a female fetus.

While such beliefs may add a whimsical dimension to the pregnancy journey, they should be regarded as folklore rather than empirical fact.

In reality, there is no scientific evidence supporting the use of body temperature changes, including cold feet, as reliable indicators of fetal sex.

In my experience my feet were incredibly cold during my pregnancy with a boy, however- I was pregnant during the winter with him so this wasn’t the best symptom to help me detwrmine if he was a boy or girl.
