Trying to find out the sex of your baby before the ultrasound or blood test can be rather confusing!

There are so many old wives’ tales out there that are completely wrong and then there are some that are dead on accurate! 

Like many expectant parents, I was eager to find out the gender of my baby as early as possible!

While the only true way to determine a baby’s sex is through medical tests like noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) or the 20-week anatomy scan, I couldn’t resist exploring fun baby gender prediction methods—even if they were completely unscientific!

Baby Boy Symptoms

Here are 8 common symptoms of a baby boy pregnancy:

  1. Pregnancy Nausea is present but not horrible like it is with a girl
  2. Craving salty and spicy foods
  3. Urine is much darker in color
  4. Baby’s heart rate is below 160
  5. Skin is glowing and beautiful – no breakouts!
  6. Itchy skin during pregnancy
  7. Darker, more prominent Linea Nigra line is present for a baby boy
  8. Boy belly is carried more in the front than in the sides

Some of these symptoms are well-known old wives’ tales, however, most moms I know agree with many of these obvious signs for a boy or girl!

When I was pregnant with my boy, a few things that really stuck out for me was how dark my urine was, I didn’t want any sweets which is incredibly unlike me, and the baby’s heart rate was much lower than my girls.  

I also wasn’t getting as sick with my little boy like I did with my girls.

I was nauseous, but nowhere near as bad as I was during my pregnancies with my girls. 

My pregnancy cravings were meat and spicy foods with my boy. I got nauseous even thinking about a steak when I was pregnant with all of my little girls.

Baby Girl Pregnancy Symptoms

Here are 9 pregnancy symptoms and signs you may be having a baby girl:

  1. Terrible morning sickness and pregnancy nausea that last until middle of second trimester
  2. Heart rate is. much faster with a baby girl, usually around 160 and up. (my girls were all 170/s-180)
  3. Skin changes during pregnancy – more frequent breakouts 
  4. Craving more sweet foods and less salt and spice
  5. Your belly is more on the sides and all around rather than a basketball up in front of your body
  6. Urine is light in color
  7. Hair is gorgeous and thicker
  8. Left breast appears bigger than your right breast and breasts feel more sore during a girl pregnancy
  9. Linea Nigra appears early on with a baby girl in the first trimester

Some of these symptoms may seem like old wives tale but many of these symptoms were absolutely accurate with my pregnancies!

The Chinese Gender Predictor

One of the most famous baby gender predictors is the Chinese Gender Prediction Chart, said to date back to ancient times in Ancient Beijing.

The Chinese Gender chart uses a pregnant mom’s lunar age and her due date (or conception month) to predict whether she’s having a little boy or little girl.

According to legend, this Chinese birth chart was used by world leaders and noble families in ancient China to ensure male heirs.

I tried a Chinese Gender Predictor Calculator online, but I had my doubts—after all, there’s no scientific evidence backing it up and it didn’t actually work. 

After finally having our boy, it doesn’t add up with the Chinese gender chart!

This is another myth that only seems to work for some women, not all for sure!

Old Wives’ Tales & Gender Prediction Tests

Besides the Chinese Gender Calendar, I came across many old wives’ tales that claim to predict the sex of the baby based on these things:

  • The wedding ring gender test: Swinging a ring over the belly predicts gender based on movement.
  • Nub theory: Examining the angle of the fetal sex-specific characteristics on early ultrasounds.

While these were fun to try, I knew they were just for entertainment.

Most are unscientific methods without research from peer-reviewed journals or credible sources.

Reliable Methods

For those who want more accurate ways to determine baby’s gender, doctors rely on medical tests like:

  • 20-week ultrasound – Performed by an ultrasound technician, this scan looks for fetal sex-specific characteristics.
  • NIPT (Noninvasive Prenatal Testing) – A blood test that detects fetal DNA in the mother’s blood and can identify the presence of the Y chromosome as early as 10 weeks gestation. NIPT is highly accurate in predicting gender, boasting an accuracy rate above 99%. 
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) & Amniocentesis – Used to check for genetic abnormalities like Down syndrome, these tests also confirm gender. While this method is highly accurate for gender prediction, it does carry a small risk of complications.
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Testing – This advanced technique identifies autosomal-specific regions in fetal DNA to determine the baby’s sex.

Conclusion

While I had fun playing around with the Chinese Gender Predictor Tool and other baby gender predictors, I knew that the only reliable methods were medical tests confirmed by my healthcare provider.
