Homemade Spider Repellent

Spiders in your home are the worst! My daughters hate spiders, possibly more than snakes! I disagree there, however, certain spiders are a big no-no for me as well.

When we moved into our new home we discovered a lot of spider eggs in our garage. I wanted to find an effective, yet natural way to kill the spider eggs without a lot of toxic chemicals in our garage and so close to the inside of our home.

I searched and searched for different spider sprays and spider repellents at our home improvement store but nothing was non-toxic. Many of the spider prays at the store had such harmful active ingredients.

I couldn’t believe that I was unable to find one natural spider repellent on the market!

Lo and behold, I came home and decided to do my own research and use some essential oils to try instead of the sprays at the store. After plenty of trial and error, here are the best recipes for a natural homemade spider repellent!

Below are two of the best natural homemade spider repellents. These recipes are easy to make and won’t cost you an arm and a leg! Best ways to keep your home spider-free!

Peppermint Oil Spider Spray Recipe

Using peppermint essential oil can be one of the easiest ways to keep spiders away! Peppermint essential oil has a strong scent that’s great at repelling spiders.

Spiders hate the smell of peppermint!

Peppermint oil works so well but it does have a few disadvantages. If you have any pets in your house, they won’t like the peppermint oil either. So, this spider spray may not be for you if you’re a pet lover.

Also, if you have a baby or little toddlers in the house, spraying too much peppermint oil can cause some skin irritation and dizziness. It’s very important that your child or pet doesn’t touch the peppermint oil and then touch their eyes or face.

This peppermint spider repellent spray will absolutely do the job if you’re able to use it in your home.

It will certainly keep away your basic house spiders, brown recluses, and black widow spiders that we all dislike!

Below is the recipe:

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Fill your spray bottle up with water and add your 10-15 peppermint oil drops and shake well! That’s all there is to it! Easy peasy!

Again, this is one of the BEST WAYS to keep spiders away from your home. Spray this mixture on window sills, window screens, small holes in your basement, storage areas, door openings, or any dark corners and open areas in your home where you know those pesky spiders are bound to hide!

Using natural oils like peppermint is safer than some of the toxic deet product on the market today.

Repeat the application every other week until you no longer see any more spiders.

Spider Repellent Vinegar Spray

A very safe, natural spider deterrent is using vinegar. White vinegar will also take care of your spider problem quickly!

The best part about using vinegar spray is that it’s safe to use around pets and children.

Vinegar is a great insect repellent product, so it won’t just help to keep spiders away! Vinegar mixed with some dish soap and a pinch of salt makes an effective solution.

Spiders and bugs hate the smell of vinegar and it leaves a sour taste in their mouths so they will run away fast!

If you’d like to add some citronella essential oil to your mixture, it will only work better! Spiders hate citrus scents! Between the vinegar, dish soap and citronella oil, they’ll stay away for as long as possible!

Ingredients:

Directions:

  • Combine 1 cup of water with 1 cup of white vinegar, add essential oils if you want, if you don’t have any on hand this mixture will still work! shake it up and you’re good to go!

Again, this vinegar spray is safe for pets and children, so go ahead and spray your kitchen sink and any other areas around your house. The essential oils help add a pleasant scent!

How Often Should You Reapply?

As mentioned above, every week would be good if you are just starting out with the sprays. If you are doing the window sills or any outside areas, it’s best to continue weekly because of possible rain washing it away.

Inside areas, you may be able to go a bit longer.

Which Spider Repellent Works Best?

In my personal opinion, if I had to choose one, I’d say the peppermint oil spray works as the best spider repellent! However, if you have a lot of pets, then you’ll want to go with a safer version by using the vinegar mixture.

The vinegar mixture works just as well but you may have to reapply it more often than the peppermint oil repellent recipe.

Other Helpful Tips

Before you start spraying the spider repellent everywhere, be sure to get out that vacuum cleaner first! The best way to get rid of the spiders fast is by spraying them in a clean home rather than keeping the spider webs and egg sacs sitting there!

Check for any hiding places you may have missed before you spray or enclosed areas that they may be hiding in!

*Bonus Tip

Another great tip is getting some diatomaceous earth and spreading it around your home. Applying Diatomaceous Earth all over your lawn is a toxic-free and easy way to repel spiders and even ticks. DE is made up of tiny fossilized aquatic organisms and kills when the ticks walk over the DE powder!
